Trying to break MS-W addiction (Windows Sucks)

by r_c, Thursday, November 16, 2006, 03:35 (4118 days ago)

I've been using M$-Windows for many years; unfortunately, using Windows is like a relationship going south.... It was hot in the beginning, but in recent years I just seem to be getting a lot more crap from it..... & now I'd like a divorce

As far as Apple goes, I'm not so sure they're any better than M$... apparently their computers are made of solid gold, so I can't afford the $$$$ for a Mac

I recently started reading about & looking into Linux

I am now a firm believer in Open Source Software, and after trying several distros of Linux, I'd simply tell anyone wanting to break the MS-W addiction, get a copy of PCLinuxOS..... it's a breeze to install and use....

If you think M$ and Windows SUX.... there is hope for us pc computing peasants... move to the New Linnux World

I second you.

Yes, mate, I second you.

We could easily find that almost all our daily PC requirements can be fulfilled by Linux, but I have to say that I will hold the Windows OS for awhile.

Trying to break MS-W addiction

by Johnny, Friday, December 08, 2006, 20:32 (4095 days ago) @ Doug

I have used MS products since DOS. I have also worked on and with UNIX since the early 90's. More recently I have been running Linux (SuSE) at home but still have my XP box as the main family PC.

After Novell -

(whom I can't talk about without thinking in profanity so lets just be kind and say they are really - really - really stupid. The kind of stupid that is married to greed and screws everybody.)

- jumped into bed with Steve Ballmer giving MS the platform and the veneer of credibility to the uninformed masses that somehow the linux community owes MS for intellectual property infringement (instead of the other way around). It would be so funny if they didn't have an army of lawyers and marketing geeks at their disposal to push their ridiculous and money grubbing agendas.

enough ranting - I'm looking to jetison MS completely.
How do I wean my family from the MS addiction?
Any ideas?

Please don't rant against MS, because then I'll start, then that's all we'll be doing.

Of course I have my rants againts Linux, too. That's mostly because the desktop market has just been sitting there for years, waiting for Linux to take it, but they haven't been able to step up to the plate. So Linux is a disappointment for me in many ways.

The good news is that within the last few years, new Linuxes have come along targeting the desktop market. Not all are succcessful at making a windows equivalent, but some are getting pretty good. I think MS may have shot themselves in the foot with Vista/DRM, which gives Linux another chance to take the desktop. I'm just not sure Linux can do it this time, either.

Try freespire. It is an easy adjust from ms and includes a really neat feature called click and run. You just click on a program and it will install it without needing any other help. No coding period. Then when you feel comfortable move to a more powerful linux distro.
I set my wife up with it 2 mo ago and she installed all her own programs herself. She didn't understand ms installations but she has taken to CNR like a duck to water.
Try it it is free

I am apparently destined to become a linux convert. I am so disgusted with M$. The e-support is from HELL! Brain dead, for sure, as apparently unable to comprehend/answer a most basic administrative question, not once but time after time! If you have any basic suggestion(s) in that regard, especially in regard to a functional, Linux OS which could operate on a PC originally set up for Window$, then please send to my email address. Although, my outright disgust is so irretractable that at this point in time I do believe I could be quite willing to simply toss this PC right out the proverbial, er, window, and start fresh. THANK YOU!

As an update to my earlier communication, of yesterday, I went to the site of PClinuxOS. The sun is now shining, and things are now looking much brighter. My thanks to you, whoever you are, for providing this site. After all, I had simply typed the one thought which had been at the top of my mind onto my search engine, and here I am. Again, THANKS!!!

Download (and burn)a live version of Simply Mepis, and Freespire. After the live CD finally loads, install it. I am using Mepis which is largely based on Ubuntu now. It has a full ATI Radeon driver for this old 32MB PowerColor 7000 card I am using on this PC I got cheap at the Dell auction. I am doing everything on this PC I bought/rebuilt for under $150 US, that I do on my "Vista" computer that I spent a lot more on. Linux rocks Mr. Bill.
